Mortal Kombat 1 Announcement Trailer Breakdown

After so many months of waiting, we finally got a glimpse of the first official announcement trailer for the new Mortal Kombat game. The trailer was released on May 18th, and the game is set to be released on September 19th, 2023. As you already know, the game is titled Mortal Kombat 1, but is it truly another reboot of the franchise? Today we will break down the Mortal Kombat 1 announcement trailer together.

Mortal Kombat 1 trailer

The trailer starts with a monologue by Liu Kang, after which we see Kung Lao working in a field while Raiden appears suddenly. In the next scene, we witness the redesigned Kitana, the queen of Edenia, in a royal carriage, and it is then revealed that Mileena is seated next to her. Moving on to the next scene, Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) and Kuai Liang (Sub-Zero) are seen in the same location, which appears to be a house or possibly a temple, and they seem to be in a moment of peace. The next significant development is when they all, including Kitana, turn their gaze toward the sky and witness a gigantic red portal.

Sub-Zero and Scorpio standing in the room

In the next scene, we return to the field with Raiden and The Great Kung Lao when suddenly the Fire God Liu Kang appears and descends from the sky. But what comes next is truly astonishing. Another portal opens in the field, and as you may have guessed, Shang Tsung emerges from it. Does this suggest that both endings are considered canon? Following this, we are treated to a series of brief scenes depicting potential fatalities, with characters slashing and dismembering each other. However, the most intriguing aspect is the implication that Shang Tsung has been traveling across timelines, eliminating all the other characters, but this is still just our theory. The trailer ends with Liu Kang ripping the hands using both blue and orange dragons and then cutting Shang Tsung into two halves.

Graphics and costumes

The graphics are overwhelming, and this is the best cinematic trailer so far in 2023 and the Mortal Kombat series. As we can see, there should probably be The Great Kung Lao or regular Kung Lao, or they’re just different skins for the same characters. Just like in Mortal Kombat 11, the characters aren’t as cartoonish as they were in previous games. In the last couple of games, the team started with Mortal Kombat X, and especially Mortal Kombat 1, the team started creating more realistic characters and stories. They’ve also changed their famous dragon logo, which is the Mortal Kombat symbol; it’s now orange-blue, like Liu Kang’s dragon fists of fire or whatever they’re called.

Fantasy Warden has covered all Mortal Kombat Female characters, so we hope that we’ll see some of them reviewed and included in the story. Also, one more fact is that at the end of the trailer, it says “It’s in our blood” and then the trailer reveals that if you pre-order you’ll get Shang Tsung as a playable character and early beta access. Unfortunately, that’s it for now guys this was just a 2 minute trailer, so nothing much has been revealed. So far the game and everything looks amazing and finally, the story is moving forward. This will make most fans like us happy.
