Monster Hunter Now: Coral Pukei-Pukei

Today we received amazing news, a new large monster variant has joined the Monster Hunter Now Universe. Namely, the Pukei-Pukei subspecies called Coral Pukei-Pukei was introduced on Monday 25th of March. And just like other variants, it will be available to hunt for a short period of time. Anyway, back to Pukei-Pukei: let’s see what this monster has to offer. 

Coral Pukei-Pukei Basics

In the info given to players, we were expecting a lot of similarities with the Coral Pukei-Pukei from the Monster Hunter World game, and that is what we received. Coral Pukei-Pukei is a water element large monster, with yellow feathers and a red body. Since regular Pukei-Pukei attacks were poison spit and smoke sprinkle from the tail, we were expecting a similar thing from the Coral subspecies, but with water. The coral variant is a bit more aggressive and attacks more with its tail. I was expecting that Coral Pukei-Pukei would have a similar rage charge to Deviljho, but this was not included. The head, back, wings (left and right), and tail are breakable parts of this large monster.

How to Fight Coral Pukei-Pukei

Basic hunt notes

Fighting with Coral Pukei-Pukei will require you to use Poison and Ice element weapons. Make sure you know its behavior and weak spots. As expected, the head is one of the weak spots, so try to aim for it. Since it is a bit more aggressive and uses the tail more for attacks, I recommend avoiding hunt from behind. Be alerted of the special attack, and use water-resistant armor to minimize the upcoming damage. Breaking head and tail makes the water attacks stop. The distance is the enemy if you plan to hunt this creature, so try to stay close to it. Do not forget that it is a water-element monster, which means that water-element weapons will have little effect on the hunt.

Just like regular Pukei-Pukei, the Coral variant uses different attacks. Some of the basic attacks are tong attack and tail whip. You can avoid them by swiping backward. But there are some new and unique attacks that none of the large monsters used so far. One of them is a water spit attack. It is an area attack in which the monster spits a water ball toward the hunter, and to be able to avoid it you should swipe to the side. Not like me in the picture above. The main special attack is similar to the jump rope game called Helicopter. The monster will fly up in the air and start firing water from the tail. Then the tail will spin around in circles starting from small and spreading to big circle. When this happens I recommend going a bit further from the monster. Then you need to watch for the openings and use them to get close to the Coral Pukei-Pukei. It is a good opportunity to give additional damage and to do some combos.

When and Where Can It Be Found?

Coral Pukei-Pukei is discoverable in the forest and swamp habitats. The game creators, Niantic, announced in the first appearance info that we can expect Coral Pukei-Pukei to be very present in Hunt-a-thon Points. But today, the first day of the arrival I didn’t find any in 12 Hunt-a-thon Points. The first appearance of this large monster was on Monday 25th of March at 09:00 a.m. and we will be able to hunt it up till Sunday, 7th April. Two weekends (29th-31st March and 5th-7th April) are short periods designated to have increased appearance of this subspecies. In the following spring events, we can expect additional appearances.

Coral Pukei-Pukei Weapons and Armor

This subspecies provides hunters with unique new weapons and armor. To be able to forge them you will need to hunt as many as possible Coral Pukei-Pukei in a short period. The armor set starts at grade 5 and is designed to boast the Power Prolonger skill, meaning it will boast the Long Sword, Charge Blades, and Dual Blades. The coil enhances the bowgun with Reload Speed skill. The hat has a Weakness Exploit skill that increases affinity starting with 20% when attacking weak spots. The Pukei Laggon Braces are something that is must have since they have Rising Tide skill, which slightly increases attack power and defense as the hunt time passes.

Since it will be available to hunt for a short period of time, we recommend concentrating on one weapon type. Weapons created from Pukei-Pukei are a water element,  and they look pretty amazing. We have a new Sword & Shield called Laguna Blossom, a Great Sword – Laguna Golem, a Hammer looking like a big pink feder duster – Aqua Flora, a Light Bowgun – Laguna Blitz, a Bow – Laguna Shot, and a Lance – Laguna Pike. That is why we recommend concentrating on the weapon you have mastered the best.
