We will explore some games like Brotato that can scratch that roguelike feeling many of us yearn for. Brotato has captured the hearts and brains of many casual gamers but what happens once you try out all the best Brotato builds and unlock all the best Brotato weapons and want to seek a similar adventure? Don’t worry, there are plenty of experiences similar to the popular spud fighting game that have their own unique twists that you will love. This is our list of 5 must-play games for Brotato fans.
Vampire Survivors
Vampire Survivors is one of the best-pixelated roguelike experiences out there that gives you not only great replayability of a lot of levels but also plenty of new weapons, characters, and secrets that you need to dig for! It’s not only one of the best games like Brotato, but it is considered an “OG” in this genre. There are levels that aren’t played in a usual roguelike way and bosses that aren’t killed in a straightforward manner and that’s where the fun lies. You will constantly be exploring and discovering new ways of playing and conquering your enemies.
Each round you will choose a character and be placed on a 30-minute timer that you need to survive. Different characters have their own starting abilities/bonuses and the weapons and power-ups you get throughout the game will depend on the ones you’ve chosen early on. For example, if you chose weapons/powerups X, Y, and Z when you leveled up early on it doesn’t mean that you won’t get new ones after that. It just means that the game will push for these ones more to help you level them up and evolve them. Weapons evolve when they’re paired up with a matching bonus.
The game currently has 5 DLCs that enrich its adventure, but we advise that you hold off on those and play just the base game first, as the abundance of content can be confusing. The game supports local coop for up to 4 players, so you can even jump in with your friends to make it more fun!
Wizard With a Gun
Wizard With a Gun is really true to its name as it lets you play a wizard that uses a gun with all kinds of magical properties and ammunition. This game is a progress-oriented roguelike where you build your base and visit different worlds to hunt monsters and reap rewards. You need to manage your resources and make sure you have enough ammo and special powers before jumping into a new world.
The game is beginner-friendly and will walk you through the basics. Even though it has the resource management that maybe some casual roguelike gamers don’t like, the fighting experience is pretty much like a Brotato one where you need to dive and dodge the enemies while attacking them. Wizard With a Gun is available for an online coop (up to 4 players) which will give you the opportunity to combine different bullets and abilities with your friends while roaming the unknown.
Halls of Torment
If you’re on a hunt for a Diablo roguelike game, you’ve found it. Halls of Torment reminds us of the legendary RPG in that you get to gear up your character with bonus carrying stuff and level-up perks let you choose between some classic upgrades like attack speed, damage %, crit chance, etc. It is one of the best games like Brotato because the slain enemies drop crystals that you need to pick up to level up. You also start with a pretty basic character but with time you get access to others as well.
You can pick up new abilities that give you extra damage output while defeating enemies and bosses. Even though most of the bonuses and abilities you find while playing a match are temporary, Blessings are permanent. They are boosts that you can purchase with gold thus starting a new run more powerful.
The game isn’t too difficult so it allows you to get a quick grip on it even if you are new to the roguelike genre.
Synthetik Legion Rising
If developers of Brotato and Counter-Strike ever met, then Synthetik would be the game they made. A tactical shooter where you need to take cover, check your ammo, and carefully pick off enemies with a roguelike twist is one of a kind in this genre. The game puts a big focus on the guns that you use and gives you a realistic setting in which your guns can jam and overheat. Also, you need to reload magazines manually, which gives the game an authentic real-life feeling.
The gameplay is quite simple. You choose a class, perks, and equipment and head into levels to clear evil AI robots and upgrade your character on the way. Classes are similar to a classic shooter game where you get to choose between Engineer, Sniper, Demolisher, etc.
When compared to other games like Brotato, this game has a much slower pace and makes you pick your shots carefully. Even though you’re playing from a bird’s eye view, you will have a rectangle and need to aim manually at your enemies. Headshots deal extra damage like in any shooter game, but you take serious damage when hit as well so don’t go Rambo style when playing this one.
Soulstone Survivors
Soulstone Survivors is a roguelike very similar to Vampire Survivors with a couple of unique twists. First of all, it’s extremely bright and dynamic with plenty of attack effects flying around that can confuse you at first. But, don’t worry as it’s something that you can easily get used to.
The game has a familiar roguelike level-up system where you need to collect coins dropped by dead monsters and get different buffs when you reach a new level. The buffs themselves are versatile and very customizable meaning that you will often be offered to pick up a new weapon/summon/weapon effect that will help you thin out the horde going after you.
Another unique thing about Soulstone Survivors is that you can dash with your character. This might not seem like a lot at first but when you’re battling dozens of monsters and especially bosses, using dashes smartly can allow you to dodge a powerful attack or jump in and out to deliver crucial damage without paying the ultimate price for it.
