Brotato is a truly versatile game with 62 unique characters available, each with pros and cons. If you are new to Brotato, check out our Brotato beginners guide to get a general sense of the game. So when talking about the best characters in Brotato it really can come down to the personal preference of the player. Do you like diving the enemies and slashing them with swords or do you perhaps prefer blowing them up with a bazooka?
Still, there are some spud warriors that we would say are fun by default, meaning their basic setup is so insanely interesting that you just have to try them out. That is why we decided to come up with a list of 15 best Brotato characters that you should try as soon as you can!
Explorer
Explorer is one of those characters that can easily go undetected in the search for the most fun character but, he is in fact one of the more unique characters in the game. That’s because he brings a bigger map for you to play on (33% bigger), +25% enemies, a boost in tree spawn rate, and a Lumberjack shirt (lets you 1-hit trees).
The build that works great with Explorer’s traits is definitely the structure build with a combo of Wrenches and Screwdrivers that shift the damage output to Turrets and Landmines since this character comes with -40% Damage. The key to this amusing way of playing the game would be the Pocket Factory, which lets you turn all those trees you have into weapons, and Tree that lets you get a real forest on your map. On top of that, if you get a Chain Gun you’ll be unstoppable.
Multitasker
You probably know by now that most spuds hold only 6 weapons. Not Multitasker. This super-spud can hold 12 weapons at a time which makes him a one-of-a-kind killing machine.
The interesting thing about holding more weapons isn’t just the 12 different sources of damage that you get but the weapon class bonuses. When you can hold double the number of weapons that other characters can, you can also reap bonuses from having more than 3 or 4 classes.
To completely dominate the battleground we suggest you spice things up a bit by picking pierce or bounce-boosting items like Sharp Bullet, Bandana, or Richochet. This gives you extra killing power considering that now 12 sources of damage can pierce.
Doctor
The Doctor is probably the Brotato character for beginners to take on Danger 5 because his healing is simply insane. HP Regeneration modification boost and medical weapons lifesteal will keep him constantly healed up, which means that you don’t need to dodge around much and create special strategies.
Even though you’re being pushed to use one of the two medical weapons with Doctor, the gameplay doesn’t feel boring. Having said that, we suggest you play with Scissors instead of Medical Gun because they belong to the Precise weapon class which boosts your Crit chance and makes you feel unkillable even when diving in big groups of enemies.
Knight
Another beginner-friendly character is the Knight. The easy gameplay he offers lies in his Armor-Melee damage relationship where he gets +2 Melee Damage for every +1 Armor he gets. With this trait, you can make a killer tank out of him without too much trouble.
Big enemies and especially bosses won’t be able to kill you that easily with your big damage reduction. Boss fights are especially important because often you will try to outlive the boss when you’re unable to kill him and with Knight, you can do it without breaking a sweat. Still, you’re not immortal so keep an eye out on those bursts of high-damage attacks that some bosses can hit you with.
Jack
Even though Jack doesn’t look like a special character he is one of the most challenging ones in the whole game. In the unique setup that he offers where you have a smaller number of stronger enemies, it’s very easy to find yourself in a neverending dying spiral.
Getting single-target high-damage weapons like Revolver and Laser Gun with high attack speed can do the trick but still, you need to implement a whole new strategy with him as your environment is one that no other character has.
Speedy
When we talk about Speedy we’re talking about the art of dodge. As his name suggests, this character will be the fastest Brotato character if you play your cards right – getting 6x Jousting Lances. We dicuss this more in our Brotato builds guide.
Speedy’s starting Speed is +30% and when you combine that with full hands of Jousting Lances where each gives you a Speed boost, you’ll be running along like Usain Bolt. Since the weapons punish you when you stand still with – Damage % you are forced to move around all the time and practice dodging.
Plenty of characters in Brotato will need to rely on dodging attacks by moving around the map and when you master that skill you will be a big problem for the alien army.
Soldier
If there’s a polar opposite of Speedy it’s the Soldier. This character in a way imitates FPS games, where you usually have to stand when shooting at enemies.
Since the Soldier is the only character that is unable to shoot while moving you need to make an array of short steps when moving to collect material or dodge damage. The gameplay of this Brotato character is indeed original and puts a whole new challenge in front of you. That’s why he is one of our favorites.
Renegade
The first thing that pops to mind when talking about Renegade is chaos. This character just shoots all over the place and doesn’t care if he hits or not. With an original ‘50% Accuracy trait and +2 Projectiles with any weapon, he really does remind us of a blindfolded shooter spraying bullets around with no particular goal.
The biggest advantage and most fun aspect of Renegade is using any kind of explosive gun because who wouldn’t like three rockets instead of one when an alien army is approaching? Another special strategy used with this character is using 6x Slingshots. This weapon’s projectile bounces so when you have a lot of them there are plenty of stones bouncing around. Still, rockets are more fun.
Golem
You can’t heal in any way. That’s the biggest thing that sticks to your mind when you first encounter Golem. How am I supposed to play then? Nevertheless, Golem is a force to be reckoned with. You just need to switch sides in your mind and think of yourself as a boss – you’re a damage-dealing menace with a massive HP pool without any help.
Golem gets interesting when you play him with 6x Spiky Shields. These weapons scale with Armor instead of Melee damage so you’re boosting your basic survival stat at the same time you’re making your damage output bigger. This way, you can totally ignore the Melee damage stat when leveling up alongside Life Steal and HP Regen which are already useless on this character.
On top of everything Spiky Shield belongs to Medieval and Blunt Weapon class. The former adds Armor and Dodge to your stats while the latter boosts your Armor and HP. Golem Spiky Shield build – a tank made in heaven.
Demon
Demon is at the same time one of the more complex and one of the more OP Brotato characters. His downside is that you pay for items with your Max HP but then again your materials convert into HP and you get to use them for plenty of rerolls both in the level-up upgrades and in the shop that you wouldn’t be able to do with other spuds.
He can be played in a couple of ways but one of the most amusing strategies is to play him with 6x Ghost Scepters. These weapons give you HP when stacking up kills on them so they are literally a source of unlimited HP. As you level them up, boost your damage and attack speed you’ll start to get a lot of HP. And we mean a lot.
You will have so much HP that you will be erasing waves even after wave 20 on Danger 5. This doesn’t go to say that Demon is unkillable. But he is pretty close to being.
Cyborg
Another tricky and unusual character. Cyborg gets a Minigun at level 1 and a massive boost in Ranged damage modifications but with a trick – all of his Ranged damage stat switches to double the Engineering halfway through your fight. This means that you need to build a half-Ranger, half-Engineer character here.
What you’ll need to do is grab 4-5 Wrenches and a second Minigun when the opportunity shows itself. This will put you on that fine balance where you can clear enemies well in both phases of gameplay. The jackpot with Cyborg is getting the Chain Gun which scales both with Ranged damage and Engineering so when the switch between the stats happens you’re basically losing nothing.
The stat switch is the main gameplay point here as you’ll always need to be on your toes and try to balance this complex way of fighting.
Builder (Abyssal Terrors DLC)
Even though Builder looks like Engineer he’s far from being it. He is actually banned from having any structures except the one main turret that he has from level one.
The name of the game here is boosting and feeding your tower so it can clear enemies since your character won’t be able to do it. Boosting Engineering will give it damage while leaving the materials uncollected will not only make its attack speed and range higher but will also level it up.
Once you reach the maximum level of your Builder’s Turret you can focus on picking up more materials than before and focus on your own survival a bit. We can say that with this character, Brotato made a tower defense mode in its roguelike experience which is least to say pretty amusing!
Ogre (Abyssal Terrors DLC)
It’s not piercing, it’s not explosion, it’s Ogre! This OP spud is one of the stars in our Brotato character guide because you’ll be blown apart when you see his true power.
Your main weapon is the fact that enemies that take double their max HP as damage explode based on 50% of your HP. This lets you clear masses and masses of enemies without even trying! You’ll want to stack a group of enemies on top of each other as you run away from them and then hit those smallest aliens (since they’re the ones with the smallest HP pool to trigger the explosion domino effect!
No character in Brotato has the same effect as Ogre when clearing enemies. Good piercing and bouncing projectiles will clear a bit of enemies in every direction, explosions will do an AOE damage and clear that particular area, but carefully planned hits with ogre can literally clear all enemies from your screen.
Diver (Abyssal Terrors DLC)
When hunting aliens with Diver, there’s one simple strategy to rely on: “reel em in and kill them.” Harpoon does the reeling part that this character gets by default at level 1, and the killing part can be done with any precise weapon like Sharp Tooth.
Harpoon actually triggers a buff that gives you a +300% damage to enemies previously hit by Ranged damage (Harpoon). When Harpoon hits enemies they will glow white and you need to focus them and wipe them out. This is a pretty demanding strategy considering that most other characters don’t force you to choose any particular target.
Creature (Abyssal Terrors DLC)
The Creature is a perfect character for people who like to build glass canon killers. Having 1 cursed Fish Hook at level one, on top of his damage scaling with 35% Curse and a +1 Curse at level up is already pretty OP since you have great chances of getting cursed weapons and items when locking them in the shop.
Of course, the entire build of the character depends on your choices but what we found most fun was boosting his damage and focusing on Max HP and Armor only occasionally. It’s a tricky build to pull off but when you do you can melt bosses in the Abyss on Danger 5 in 10 seconds.
Conclusion on Brotato Characters
Naturally, it’s not very easy to pick the best characters in Brotato as each one has something that makes him unique and fun. But, we focused on those we felt brought the most fun to your gameplay and were in some way created with out-of-the-box thinking.
The Abyssal Terrors DLC and the update that came with it have proven to us that the game is taking a more creative turn and we honestly can’t wait to see what’s in store for Brotato in the future.
