5 Indie Games Like Goblin Stone

A collage made out of 5 game printscreens, from 5 games that are similar to Goblin Stone

After a long wait, Goblin Stone is finally here. Following up on the game launch, we tested it out and wrote our Goblin Stone review which you can check out. The chill, turn-based RPG genre is a niche one so I decided to explore what other games are similar to Goblin Stone in case you want to take a break from it. In this article, I will just focus on Indie games of that genre since you probably have heard about more popular ones. The games in this list might not be actually the same like Goblin Stone but in terms of genre and/or the atmosphere are very much alike. Without further ado, check out our list of games like Goblin Stone.

Darkest Dungeon 2

Ok so the story is as follows: As the whole world is crumbling apart, your marry band of outlaws is send to destroy corrupted pieces of reality and repair the shattered world. I must admit, it’s a fun premise and the art that follows is as grim and dark as the narrative is. If you are a fan of these kinds of games, Darkest Dungeon 2 is the one for you – If I had to classify it, I would say that Darkest Dungeon 2 is a roguelike, gothic, RPG dungeon crawler set in a dark fantasy world.

As I mentioned, you get to make your own band of outlaws and upgrade them in various ways through the game. However, the game has a strong luck element to it as well, meaning that sometimes, no matter what you do, you will still lose the run. The reason why it’s on our list of games like Goblin Stone is the fact that, at least in theory, the basic game mechanics are similar and the art in both games is simply amazing.

The Last Spell

Similarly to Darkest Dungeon 2, in Last Spell you are also in command of the team in charge of saving the humanity. You will get to make a base on a hex grid, very similarly to the one seen in They Are Billions, and defend against the marching armies of doom (literally) coming towards your base.

The Last Spell is another roguelike game but with tower defense elements as well as RPG to some degree. Sure, perhaps it’s not exactly the same like Goblin Stone, but in general, the team-principle is still there. This one is definitely a niche game but if you are a fan of tower-defense you should check it out.

Wasteland 3

As the name suggests, the setting of Wasteland 3 is, well, the frozen Wasteland of what once was Colorado. The team of survivors that you command with is basically trying to rebuild the society despite radiation that emits from every corner and hordes of crazed enemies swarming on your team of rangers. What makes game truly special is it’s masterfully done RPG elements – almost every action will have a meaningful consequence in the game.

Wasteland 3 is RPG in it’s essence but it’s a tactical one, very similar to Goblin Stone. However, note that this game is not similar to Goblin Stone in terms of violence: Wasteland 3 is filled with it and even the scenes are grotesque at times. This is an 18+ game but in their defense, I have to say that the whole violent tone does correspond with the base premise of the story (it is a frozen, radioactive wasteland after all).

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

For all you who enjoy a good stealth game, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a good pick. It’s an RPG with mixture of turn-based and real time mechanics – but most of the time you are either exploring the world and figuring how to go around certain enemies or how to sneak up upon them. And yes, you guessed it – this one is also done in a broken world where humanity destroyed itself and survivors are now, well, just surviving.

In Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, you will be in charge of a team of survivors. However, due to it’s unique mixture of live and turn-based action and stealth elements, this game is all about tactics and planning. Although the story is cliché, the gameplay is not – and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as with Goblin Stone.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun

Operencia: The Stolen Sun is an RPG dungeon crawler is a game which is, in my opinion, an all-round type of game. It doesn’t offer anything new or radical to the genre, but overall, the whole game is so well done – from art, to music, combat, game mechanics, everything just fits perfectly into this world. Perhaps Operancia: The Stolen Sun is a game for a bit older audience as it has that strong “Golden Age “of gaming vibe to it so many modern gamers might be thrown off by this.

Operencia let’s you choose the characters which are completely voice acted and have their own story. It is a dungeon crawler to it’s core so you won’t be able to move outside of the area in which you are supposed to be. The combat is turn-based, but done in a very special way so that it doesn’t seem sluggish and boring. It is an RPG game as well but RPG element is probably the weakest of all since it’s all super simplified. Operencia is definitely similar to Goblin Stone in many ways so you can try it and see if it’s a right pick.
