If you are an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, we have good news for you. Netflix has decided to give it a try in making its version. As announced the first season will be released on the Netflix platform on 22nd February. The first series set will have 8 episodes.
The first animated fantasy action series Avatar: The Last Airbender was developed by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino and produced under the Nickelodeon. The TV show was a big hit in the USA. The Last Airbender had three seasons with 61 episodes. The success of the Avatar series was crowned with books, video games, and a movie.
What is Avatar: The Last Airbender Universe
The world in which Avatar: The Last Airbender is set comprises of four nations. Each nation is created based on one element: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. Among regular national citizens, there are people who are able to harness the power of their nation’s element. These people are called “Element Benders” – waterbenders, earthbenders, firebenders, and airbender.
The Benders can control elements using gestures based on martial arts. Unlike regular Benders who can harness the power of only one element, there is one person who can control all four elements. This person is called Avatar. His task is to be the arbiter and to maintain harmony between nations. When Avatar dies, he reincarnates in a new body, each time in a different nation following the cycle: Fire, Air, Water, and Earth.
Netflix’s Last Airbender storyline
Observing the official Netflix trailer we can see that the series adaptation will follow the original storyline. The title of the first episode is called “The Boy in the Iceberg”. This means that in the first episode, the show tries to introduce the Avatar universe to the viewers. In the trailer, it is noticeable that we will be able to see all four elements (fire, water, earth, and air) benders. Being built on the original animated series we can expect in one of the first episodes to see events previous to the current situation in the Avatar universe.
The trailer shows us the mighty cities and machinery of the Fire Nation, the peaceful villages of the Water Tribes, the vibrant towns of Earth Kingdom, and the silenced temple of Air Nomads. The main plot will follow the kid called Aang as Avatar, with the plot twist where he doesn’t yet know how to bend any other element besides Air. Alongside Avatar we will follow brother and sister Sokka and Katara, two waterbenders that became Aang’s friends. Their goal is to help Avatar learn the bending of all four elements and to bring peace to the world.
Opposite to the Airbender Avatar team, we will have Fire Nation champions. The storyline will follow Prince Zuko, also a kid, trying to show his father that he is worthy. Prince Zuko will have a big help in his adventure in the form of his Uncle Iroh. On the other hand, his biggest opponent will be his younger sister Princess Azula.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Netflix series cast
Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender was created by Albert Kim. He is a New York producer famous for the TV show Sleepy Hollow, and Nikita. The series is directed by four prominent directors: Michael Goi, Roseanne Liang, Jabbar Raisani, and Jet Wilkinson. Each of them directed 2 episodes.
The Main character Avatar Aang was given to prominent young Canadian actor Gordon Cormier. He will play a twelve-year-old who has just become an Airbender and got frozen for a hundred years. The Avatar character will have to prevail over the fact that all the other Airbenders have been eradicated by Fire Nation. He will also need to triumph as the savior of the realm.
Roles of the Katara and Sokka have been given to Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley. They will play the role of brother and sister following Aang on his adventures. Kiawentiio will play a fourteen-year waterbender, while Ian will play her brother. He will have to overcome his lack of waterbending ability with intelligence, resourcefulness, and boomerang.
The antagonist Prince Zuko has been cast as Dallas Liu. He will play the seventeen-year prince of the Fire Nation, who has been exiled. Zuko will try to find his redemption in the form of capturing the Last Airbender. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee will play his caring Uncle Iroh, a retired Fire Nation general. He will mentor and guide Prince Zuko on his path. His natural nemesis Princess Azula will be played by Elizabeth Yu. Princess Azula is a cunning Firebending prodigy and Zuko’s younger sister.
The Fire Lord Ozai role is trusted to famous American (Korean roots) actor Daniel Dae Kim. As he was already part of the Avatar Universe by giving voice, I believe he won’t have a problem playing Lord Ozai. It will be expected from Daniel to portray the tyrannic and sadistic ruler of the Fire Nation, the dark Eminence of the Avatar: The Last Airbender Universe.
What can we expect from the Netflix adaptation?
Netflix has decided to after the long-expected Third season of The Wicher, which didn’t shine as we all expected, give us a new spicy TV show. Scared by Amazon Prime’s recent adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, we have the right to be restrained concerning the Avatar: The Last Airbender. After the trailer, expectations are very high, given the way the special effects shine light on the Avatar Universe. As for us, we are very hesitant to wait until the 22nd of February to binge the whole season at once. Please Netflix, don’t disappoint us!
