In this article, we will talk about Undead tribe in Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Since this tribe has its specific mechanism, mostly involving Reborn mechanics, we suggest that for build tips you check out our Undead meta build first and then look at this article for further analysis of all minions. Without further ado, take a look at what Undeads have in store for us in HS BG.
Tier 1 Undead Minions
Harmless Bonehead
Not so harmless after all! Hamrless Bonehead is only harmless in its name – this minion is overall a very good one. Early on, it is basically a 3/3 minion that can hit several times. Later, when Undead attack power gets ramped up, it can provide enough sustain even until late-game phases. Definitely, a worthy pick, even if you are not playing Undeads.
Risen Rider
Another minion that’s overall good is Risen Rider. Since general rule of thumb in the first turn is to take whatever has Reborn or Divine shield, this minion is a good choice in that matter. Furthermore, once you get your Undead offensive power up, it can still be useful, especially since it has Taunt as well.
Tier 2 Undead Minions
Eternal Knight is an okeish minion. Although his power on paper looks good, in reality, it’s just too slow to be relied on. If you somehow manage to get several of these guys and have some cast:Reborn capabilities it can get you through mid-game but even than, it’s not so strong as there are other options to go for.
Scarlet Skull
Scarlet Skull is generally a nice tempo minion because it has a reborn and you get plenty of stats in this stage of the game. You can’t really make it work in the later stages, but it’s good with the combination of Corpse Refiner and other Undeads.
Nerubian Deathswarmer
One of the key minions in this tribe is Nerubian Deathswarmer. It’s effect of giving Undeads +1 Attack for the rest of the game is best utilized if you can trigger the Battlecry several times (Brann, Rylak, Murkeye etc). Even you don’t have Battlecry triggers it’s still a good idea to buy him early on as he will buff up all your low-level minions such as Risen Rider and Harmless Bonehead.
Corpse Refiner
Corpse Refiner is an economy minion that works equally well in Undead and Pirate builds. The main use of this minion is to get it early on (on turn 3,4 or 5) and play it to the far right side. On your left side you should have minions with summon abilities so that the gold buff can scale with Corpse Refiner.
Tier 3 Undead Minions
Cadaver Caretaker
Cadavere Caretaker is one of the main minions for the Catacomb Crasher build, which requires Titus and Abomination. It is considered a decent tempo on Dead, especially if you played a Nerubian Deathswarmer and you got your attack up. Just know that if you’re going for the “Attack” Undeads and that build, the Caretaker can take up a lot of space up with its skeletons and it’s not really ideal. This minion is primarily used in the late game with the Catacomb Crasher build, not with the other “Attack” build.
Handless Forsaken
One of the most underrated Undead minions is Handless Forsaken. This thing gets so OP later on, that even the stock version is still a must have. If you can, cast Reborn on it; once you do, you will have a minion that will reborn and summon 5 times (Deathratte-Reborn-Deathrattle-Reborn Hand – Reborn Hand)! You don’t need a golden one though – your main power will come from Undead attack buffs so you can just get two of these and put it board. Also, be sure to align your forces properly so that no Deathrattles and/or Reborns are wasted (don’t forget, Deathrattle occurs always before Reborn).
Sore Loser
As you can already guess, Sore Loser is primarily used for tempo first and foremost, but also he’s pretty decent in the late game. If you golden him, and for example, you’re tier 6, all of your other undead will gain 12 attacks while he’s alive. So even in the late game, although he can’t scale to infinite numbers, he’s a very decent unit that will carry you through the mid-game.
Mummifier
Mummifier is pretty decent because it’s a tier 3 undead that gives you a reborn on one other undead. It can work pretty well with Anub’Arak or any undead who can gain a lot for getting reborn in the early stages of the game. It’s generally a good pickup, but in the later stages, you probably won’t have extra space for him.
Tier 4 Undead Minions
Anub’arak, Nerubian King
Anub’arak is one of the key minions in Undead tribe if you are going for a traditional Undead build. It’s Deathrattle buffs the main offensive weapon of this build and that’s it’s attack. You would really want to have Reborn on this guy as his ability is pretty slow (just think about it, for just +5 attack it will take 5 turns). The other option is to go with Titus Rivendare and improve Deathrattle with his innate ability.
Prosthetic Hand
Prostethic Hand has two main uses – in Mech tribe, it is pretty much a must have in all sorts of builds. In Undead tribe, it can be used as a buff minion for your Deathrattle minions if you are playing a traditional build.
Thundering Abomination
The next three units are the key Undead minions for a new type of play with undead, so called “Cadaver Crasher” type. Although we spoke about it already in our main guide, let’s just quickly review it here: you need Thundering Abomination(s) as your main stat minion as well as Catacomb Crasher. Those two will be buffed by Cadever Caretakers deathrattle ability that is further buffed by Titus Rivendare.
Wandering Wight
Wandering Wight is a new Undead in Battlegrounds Season 9 and it’s pretty interesting what this unit does. It essentially gives your summoned Undeads health equal to their attack, which means that if you have a lot of Undead attack stacked up, your minions will also be very beefy at the same time. One thing that you should be wary is the space on your board. In the late game it can get cumbersome, because if you want to have Wandering Wight, for example, and you also want to have Sore Loser, it can take a lot of space, so the key to playing Undeads in the late game is to have a balance of minions that have reborn and that can summon other Undeads, like Deathly Striker and Colossus of the Sun, and these types of minions (Sore Loser, Wandering Wight) that can further buff up your summoned Undeads.
Tier 5 Undead Minions
Catacomb Crasher
Catacomb Crasher has only one purpose – to buff your board once Caretaker dies (or other Deathrattle: summon minions that you might have). It’s pretty straighfoward and you don’t want this minion unless you are playing that specific comp.
Champion of the Primus
Generally speaking, Champion of the Primus is a top-tier minion, especially with his recent buff from Avenge(3) to Avenge(2)! His Avenge (2) ability is now very viable and can carry you through the game. This is probably the key undead minion for the “Attack undead build” because it’s just too strong. Having two of these and, for example, a few Undeads that have taunt and reborn will get you 10+ Attack each turn, which is extremely powerful. Before the Season 9, this ability was iffy, but now it’s pretty much the core for the “Attack Undead” build.
Nightbane, Ignited
Nightbane, Ignited is a bit awkward when playing Undeads because a lot of time you will have problems with space on your board because you want to have, for example, Champion of the Primus, and maybe a Sore Loser for tempo, and even Wandering Wight for that beefiness of your Undeads. Moreover, at the later stages, you want to get Colossus of the Sun and Deathly Striker, so these things essentially fill up your board a lot. There is really not a lot of space for Nightbane, although he can be very good with Titus. Don’t rule him out, but generally speaking, there are a bit better Undeads, especially because he doesn’t come with Reborn or any additional summons.
Wisp in the Shell
Wisp in the Shell is a pretty interesting new undead, but it kind of falls short because undeads aren’t really supposed to play with Brann, and if you want to effectively use this one, you will need Brann. He is good if you, for example, need extra HP and survivability on your Titus or a specific undead like Champion of the Primus, but generally speaking, there’s not really a good build around Wisp in the Shell. It’s more of a utility minion that you just pick up or get at some point in the game to boost HP of a key minion like Titus or Champion of the Primus.
Tier 6 Undead Minions
Ghoul-acabra
The newest addition to Undead and Beast army, Ghoul-acabra is a fun minion to play around with. Generally speaking, this minion is fine – it will provide buffs for your army but it’s not a key minion in any build. Ghoul-acabra is just one of those “good to have” minions.
Deathly Striker
Deathly Striker is one of the new undeads in Season 9 and it’s a pretty powerful minion that goes really well with “Attack” undead build. You can get a lot of good undeads and this minion is good for combat as well as gaining extra resources in the form of undead. Be wary because the Avenge 4 is pretty rough and you will need a lot of taunts and reborns in order to play Deathly Striker effectively. She is good, but you really need to have a good lineup on your board in order to maximize its potential.
Colossus of the Sun
This thing can be so annoying to play against. Colossus of the Sun is one of the best undeads for the attack undead build because it doesn’t take any extra space and it essentially has four lives. One attack with the Divine Shield, one attack after, then he reborns, then one attack with the Divine Shield and one time after it. So he basically attacks four times and if you have a lot of Attack stacked up, it’s probably the best undead minion for the late-game.
Tier 7 Undead Minion
Reccuring Nightmare
Reccuring Nightmare is super fun and super unreliable minion to have! Just read the text “give a DIFFERENT” is what it says, meaning that you need to pray to RNG gods that Deathrattle jumps onto the next minion that the enemy will hit. It can be strong for sure, but on it’s own it won’t do much – you still need to follow the standard Undead strategy in order to buff up your minions with Attack and Reborn capabilities.
