In this article, we will talk about Undead tribe in Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Since this tribe has its specific mechanism, mostly involving Reborn mechanics, we suggest that for build tips you check out our Undead meta build first and then look at this article for further analysis of all minions. Without further ado, take a look at what Undeads have in store for us in HS BG.
Tier 1 Undead Minions
Harmless Bonehead
Not so harmless after all! Hamrless Bonehead is only harmless in its name – this minion is overall a very good one. Early on, it is basically a 3/3 minion that can hit several times. Later, when Undead attack power gets ramped up, it can provide enough sustain even until late-game phases. Definitely, a worthy pick, even if you are not playing Undeads.
Risen Rider
Another minion that’s overall good is Risen Rider. Since general rule of thumb in the first turn is to take whatever has Reborn or Divine shield, this minion is a good choice in that matter. Furthermore, once you get your Undead offensive power up, it can still be useful, especially since it has Taunt as well.
Tier 2 Undead Minions
Eternal Knight
Eternal Knight is an okeish minion. Although his power on paper looks good, in reality, it’s just too slow to be relied on. If you somehow manage to get several of these guys and have some cast:Reborn capabilities (or play Eternal Knight Trinket), it can get you through mid-game but even than, it’s not so strong as there are other options to go for.
Nerubian Deathswarmer
One of the key minions in this tribe is Nerubian Deathswarmer. It’s effect of giving Undeads +1 Attack for the rest of the game is best utilized if you can trigger the Battlecry several times (Brann, Rylak, Murkeye etc). Even you don’t have Battlecry triggers it’s still a good idea to buy him early on as he will buff up all your low-level minions such as Risen Rider and Harmless Bonehead.
Corpse Refiner
Corpse Refiner is an economy minion that works equally well in Undead and Pirate builds. The main use of this minion is to get it early on (on turn 3,4 or 5) and play it to the far right side. On your left side you should have minions with summon abilities so that the gold buff can scale with Corpse Refiner.
Museum Mummy
Museum Mummy can also be consider as a buy-use-sell minion as you don’t really get much value from this one. The skeleton that it summons is okey to use and sell early on but other than that, this minion doesn’t really have many uses.
Tier 3 Undead Minions
Handless Forsaken
One of the most underrated Undead minions is Handless Forsaken. This thing gets so OP later on, that even the stock version is still a must have. If you can, cast Reborn on it; once you do, you will have a minion that will reborn and summon 5 times (Deathratte-Reborn-Deathrattle-Reborn Hand – Reborn Hand)! You don’t need a golden one though – your main power will come from Undead attack buffs so you can just get two of these and put it board. Also, be sure to align your forces properly so that no Deathrattles and/or Reborns are wasted (don’t forget, Deathrattle occurs always before Reborn).
Putrid Pupil
Putrid Pupil is a new Season 8 HS BG undead minion. Although he has been reworked and buffed up several times, he is still considered as an underdog in Undead tribe. The thing is, you don’t really need any spells early on and even if you do, the RNG element in this one is really heavy – you don’t know if he will survive long enough to give you a spell and even if he does, you don’t know what kind of a spell it will be.
Tier 4 Undead Minions
Anub’arak Nerubian King
Anub’arak is one of the key minions in Undead tribe if you are going for a traditional Undead build. It’s Deathrattle buffs the main offensive weapon of this build and that’s it’s attack. You would really want to have Reborn on this guy as his ability is pretty slow (just think about it, for just +5 attack it will take 5 turns). The other option is to go with Titus Rivendare and improve Deathrattle with his innate ability.
Mummifier
Mummifier was introduced in the last season and ever since than, it has been one of the key units for Undead builds. Simply put, it’s best to pair him with Kel’thuzad (scroll below) and this combo will give one permanent reborn in the end of every turn. Even without Kel’Thuzad, having an extra reborn is always a welcome sight in any Undead army.
Prosthetic Hand
Prostethic Hand has two main uses – in Mech tribe, it is pretty much a must have in all sorts of builds. In Undead tribe, it can be used as a buff minion for your Deathrattle minions if you are playing a traditional build.
Thundering Abomination
The next three units are the key Undead minions for a new type of play with undead, so called “Cadaver Crasher” type. Although we spoke about it already in our main guide, let’s just quickly review it here: you need Thundering Abomination(s) as your main stat minion as well as Catacomb Crasher. Those two will be buffed by Cadever Caretakers deathrattle ability that is further buffed by Titus Rivendare.
Cadaver Caretaker
As we just said, you need Cadever Caretaker for the alternative Undead comp. The good thing is that you can pick up the Caretaker anyway as he can be useful in a traditional Undead comp as well due to his massive summon potential – just be sure that your Undead attack has been increased nicely.
Tier 5 Undead Minions
Catacomb Crasher
Catacomb Crasher has only one purpose – to buff your board once Caretaker dies (or other Deathrattle: summon minions that you might have). It’s pretty straighfoward and you don’t want this minion unless you are playing that specific comp.
Champion of the Primus
Generally speaking, Champion of the Primus is a good minion to have but only in early mid game. Later on, his Avange(3) ability just falls off as it’s too slow and there are other things to use instead of this to buff your Undead forces. Long story short – if you can, grab it early on; if not, skip it in later phases.
Moroes, Steward of Death
Moroes is a very niche minion to have. It’s Deathrattle is pretty much useless on it’s own – however, this is the only way (besides Sister Deathwhisperer) to buff up the defense of your Undead army and you can only do it permanently if you have Kel’Thuzad next to Moroes. The problem is, using Kelthuzad to achieve this will deprive Moroes of it’s Reborn unless you have one spot empty so that both, Reborn and Archlich Kel’thuzad end-of-turn effect can take place. Be careful with this.
Tier 6 Undead Minions
Archlich Kel’thuzad
We have mentioned Archlich Kel’thuzad several times now – it is just a must have for every Undead army. Be careful on how you use it though – if it eats something with Reborn and you don’t have enough space, only the copy withouth reborn and with 1 defense will spawn.
Eternal Summoner
Eternal Summoner is a good end-game unit in Undead tribe. It won’t buff your army or itself for that matter – but, if you have already buffed your Undeads to high level of attack, Eternal Summoner will do just fine. However, keep in mind that “the Hand” (Handless Forsaken) with Reborn is still better than Eternal Summoner in most cases.
Ghoul-acabra
The newest addition to Undead and Beast army, Ghoul-acabra is a fun minion to play around with. Generally speaking, this minion is fine – it will provide buffs for your army but it’s not a key minion in any build. Ghoul-acabra is just one of those “good to have” minions.
Sister Deathwhisper
As we mentioned before, besides Moroes, Sister Deathwhisperer is the only way in which you can buff your Undead tribe defenses. It won’t be easy though – this minion works well only if used early on; and even then you need several other minions that you want to keep to receive the buffs that Deathwhisperer will be giving. More often than not, Sister Deathwhisper is to be skipped.
Colossus of the Sun
A new-old minion in Undead tribe in Season 8 is Colossus of the Sun. This thing can be so annoying to play against that you simply want to get it for the memes. I mean it has Divine Shield and Reborn meaning that it will Reborn with Divine Shield which pretty much guarantees 4 hits on it. It’s nothing fancy but if you are playing a regular Undead comp, it can be pretty useful, especially in mid-game if you can get it.
Tier 7 Undead Minion
Reccuring Nightmare
Reccuring Nightmare is super fun and super unreliable minion to have! Just read the text “give a DIFFERENT” is what it says, meaning that you need to pray to RNG gods that Deathrattle jumps onto the next minion that the enemy will hit. It can be strong for sure, but on it’s own it won’t do much – you still need to follow the standard Undead strategy in order to buff up your minions with Attack and Reborn capabilities.
