One of the most desired and probably one of the strongest female characters in Mortal Kombat is Queen Sindel. Her first appearance was in Mortal Kombat 3, not in 1 or 2, something that only true fans would know. With her iconic superhuman strength, Edenian descent, and incredible voice, she is quite a fighter. In Mortal Kombat, Sindel is hot as she is cold, and she is quite a deadly character with a poisonous heart. We can’t deny that Sindel is good-looking, even after being around 10,000 years old. So let’s get on with it and break down this mysterious fighter once and for all.
Appearance and the first impression of Sindel in Mortal Kombat
Ever since Sindel first appeared, she has been a force to be reckoned with in every imaginable way. She possessed strong legs, attractive curves, and huge breasts, much like many other female characters in MK. However, what truly made Sindel stand out was her long white and black hair, along with her deadly scream. While her voice may not be a part of her appearance, it is an inseparable part of her character. Throughout her appearances, Sindel often donned black and pink/purple costumes, similar to those of other female characters in the game. As the games evolved, graphics improved, and studios changed, Sindel’s appearance remained relatively consistent. However, like all other characters, she underwent some changes to become more human-like due to graphic improvements. It is important to note that Sindel’s physical characteristics, such as her appearance and body proportions, became more human-like just like all others due to graphic improvements.
To many fans, she was what we can freely call a perfect incarnation of a loving and charming mother. But eventually, they were all deceived. As the story progressed, and especially in the latest installment of Mortal Kombat 11, she was described as a cruel and deceptive character. She revealed that all she ever wanted was to rule with Shao Kahn, whom she saw as a great leader and her only true love. In doing so, she rejected her love for her only daughter, Kitana, and her husband, Jarred. Fans might have been disappointed if they didn’t see it coming, but the foreshadowing had been evident for some time. Now, on the other hand, there has been a lot of speculation about what will happen with Sindel in the next Mortal Kombat 1 game; as well as if this is her true lore or not.
The story of Sindel
Even though Sindel is famous for being a cruel and merciless warrior and queen, she was quite the contrary at the beginning of the original timeline. She was a loving and caring mother and wife, extremely loyal to her husband and her people. Sindel had a baby girl called Kitana with her husband and king of Edenia, King Jerrod. As it always is, things took a dark turn and changed for the bad. Things started to change when Outworld, led by Shao Kahn, invaded Edenia and killed King Jerrod. Since Shao Kahn was sexually interested in Sindel, he gave her an ultimatum to serve under him or be banished, probably together with baby Kitana. As any mother would do, Sindel accepted the offer and married Shao Kahn in the Outworld. Eventually, she snapped and killed herself. But by doing so, she cast a magical spell on Earthrealm. This spell that Sindel put on Earthrealm was so Shao Kahn couldn’t invade Earthrealm without a Mortal Kombat tournament.
In Mortal Kombat 2, we can see that Princess Kitana turns against Shao Kahn, as she knows of her mother’s sacrifice. After he lost another tournament in MK 2, Shao Khan resurrected Sindel to help him with the invasion. However, when she returned from beyond the grave, Sindel became corrupted too. Sindel was resurrected so she could remove the spell and allow Shao Kahn to invade the Earthrealm without a Mortal Kombat tournament. In the events of the third game of Mortal Kombat, Sindel eventually joins Kitana’s side, as Kitana reminds her of her mother’s husband Jerrod and all the evil deeds that Shao Kahn did to Edenia. At the end of Mortal Kombat 3, we can see that Sindel and Kitana took control over Edenia, but not for long.
In Mortal Kombat 4, we’ll meet one of the Elder Gods, Shinnok, who is, by the way, the ultimate villain, and the Edenian traitor, Tanya. As Edenia was being rebuilt with the help of Jade, Kitana, and Sindel, Shinnok used this opportunity to invade and destroy Edenia once and for all. This wasn’t possible without the help of Tanya, of course, but eventually, Kitana and Liu Kang managed to defeat Shinnok, and Edenia was saved once more. Now, Sindel didn’t appear and play a major role in games until Mortal Kombat: Deception. This is due to the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, where Kitana died fighting against the Deadly Alliance (an alliance between Shang Tsung and Quan Chi). Sindel makes an appearance in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon but is slaughtered alongside others, and that’s it for the original timeline.
In Mortal Kombat 9, or the first game of the new timeline, Sindel was resurrected by Quan Chi but also killed in the same game by Nightwolf. She had incredible strength, and after she defeated a couple of Earthrealm protectors, including her daughter, Nightwolf sacrificed himself to kill Sindel in the process. Now, in Mortal Kombat X, Sindel was once again resurrected, and she assisted Quan Chi and Shinnok in their invasion of the Earthrealm but was only seen in a couple of chapters of the story mode. As usual, the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil, and the evil Elder God Shinnok was defeated.
Finally, in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Sindel appears as a DLC character and is a part of the Shang Tsung team alongside Fujin and Nightwolf. Shang Tsung wants to resurrect Sindel, so he goes to the Netherealm and uses the Soul Chamber to do so. Sindel defeats Cetrion and takes Kronika’s crown, but as usual, she eventually gets deceived by Shang Tsung. This time, he used Shao Kahn and Sindel together and also took their souls. Sindel has a different background story in this timeline, as the universe rebooted and timelines changed. In this timeline, Sindel isn’t a loving mother who loved her good king Jerrod and her daughter Kitana; instead, she is depicted as a truly deceptive and crucial person. In the end, it is revealed that she killed Jerrod and always desired power as well as Shao Kahn. There are conflicting details about this “cruel and evil” Sindel, so it remains uncertain if this portrayal is true. We’ll have to wait and see.
Powers and abilities
Sindel is a powerful queen of Edenia with specific screaming power that can make enemies’ heads explode. Sindel uses also sonic blasts and other forms of sound wave abilities and powers. Other than her voice she uses Kwan Dao or crescent moon blade in Chinese. It’s like a spear with a thicker and wider blade at the end. Sindel from Mortal Kombat uses her hair too. Sindel uses a variety of martial arts moves from Zha Chuan and Fu Jow Pai. Sindel’s fighting style is like the other girls from Mortal Kombat. What we mean by this is that she, for the most part, uses her legs, unlike some characters like Sheeva or Jacqui Briggs.
